The Mullum2Bruns Paddle Sunday 27 May

May 11th, 2012

The third Mullum2Bruns Paddle is being held on Sunday 27 May 2012 as an eco-friendly family fun event, run by the community, for the community. Last year, 667 paddlers experienced the magical journey down the Brunswick River on a perfect warm winter’s day. The organisers are expecting even more this year with the Paddle’s growing popularity and the addition of a new division. The main paddling events begin at Heritage Park in Mullumbimby and conclude at the Terrace in Brunswick Heads, where live music, free paddle clinics, a duck race, raffle, BBQs and other fun entertain the crowds throughout the day in a festival atmosphere.

The Mullum2Bruns Paddle offers divisions for recreational and competitive paddlers of all ages and abilities. It’s a great program!

•The 10km Echo Fun Paddle invites residents and visitors of all ages to paddle down the river from Mullumbimby to Brunswick Heads in any non-motorised craft at their own pace.
•The 10km Hotel Brunswick Paddle Challenge is an open division and it’s always a close finish.
•The 10km Print Rescue Stand Up Paddle Challenge tests the experienced stand up paddlers.
•The shorter 1km Surf Lifesaving Club Board Challenge, in several divisions, takes off from Torakina Park and several relays for the nippers between the bridges are also included on the program.
•A new Paddle 2 Fitness Extreme Challenge has been added this year. Paddlers will contest a 20km course from Brunswick to Mullumbimby and back again.

Last year there were 667 entries, so if you would like to stay in Brunswick Heads for the weekend, it would be advisable to book your accommodation as soon as possible. Very limited kayak hire is available from local operators.

The event is once again being jointly staged by three high profile volunteer community groups: The Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Marine Rescue, Brunswick Surf Lifesaving Club and the Brunswick Visitor Centre, and funds raised on the day will be split between the three non-profit organisations.

Registration is essential. Online registrations are now open, please see www.brunswickheads.org.au go to ‘festivals and events’ and follow the links. Alternatively you can register on the day at Heritage Park in Mullumbimby from 7.30am.

This is a wonderful community event for all ages and Tallowood Ridge is just a few minutes drive from Heritage Park in Mullumbimby and with only a short drive you find yourself at the finish line in Brunswick Heads!

Full House at Housing Information Night

May 5th, 2012

Well over 100 people gathered at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall on Thursday night to hear about accessing home ownership. The information night, sponsored by Tallowood Ridge Estate, attracted a broad cross section of the local community from those keen to enter the housing market to agents and architects.

Following an introduction from Mandy Nolan, who shared thoughts on placentas, the big prawn and council approvals, guests heard from Future Housing Taskforce Founder Kevin Doodney, whose presentation covered:

• How housing affordability has changed. In 2001 the median house price was 4.7 times the average annual income. In 2011 it was 7.3 times. The average tax on a $450,000 mortgage (a Greek word meaning until death) is $150,000. All up, a $450,000 loan will cost over $1 million during the life of the loan, with weekly repayments of $672 on today’s interest rates. Historically the boomers paid a third of their income on a mortgage. Today people are being asked to pay up to 76%, which is why we are becoming a nation of renters. In 1950 the average home was 115m². Today it’s 250m².

• Smarter housing – 15% is lost in hallways and wasted space such as dinosaur rooms, which are rooms you use less than 15% of the time (formal dining rooms etc). It costs the same to build a two car lock up garage as it does to build a lounge room, whereas a two car port could be one tenth of that cost. One $12 switch that cuts all power at night can save $1,000 per year on standby electricity charges alone.

• Practical housing design options – The Individual Design dwelling costs $268,400 full turnkey (aerial, landscaped, key in the door, air conditioned) for two homes. “The beauty of it is that you can rent one side” said Kevin. “This is a duplex with two bedrooms on one side and one on the other. A second bedroom can be added for $15,000 to give two two bedroom homes”.
- The Dual Key dwelling, which is practical for those with ageing parents or teenage children, can work as one large five bedroom home or two homes with three bedrooms and a two car lock up garage on one side and two bedrooms and a one car lock up garage on the other. “Or you can rent one side, live in the other and reduce your mortgage considerably” said Kevin.

Other speakers answered questions on building and finance, President of the Mullumbimby Community Gardens Greg Dutton asked “What do you grow in a community garden?” and Christopher Dean spoke about the vision for the Tallowood Ridge community.

Burringbar single mother Michelle Matus asked about ways to access a mortgage without a deposit. “It’s good to know that Tallowood Ridge has the community in mind”, she said at the end of the night. “They are open to a more sustainable vision, with community gardens”.

“There were several layers to the evening” said Alina Burdechevsky. “There is a business opportunity on an amazing piece of land. I can see community and commerce co-existing.”

The night raised approximately $500 for the Mullumbimby Youth Cottage.

Future Housing Taskforce Seminar

April 4th, 2012

An information night is being held on Thursday May 3rd in Mullumbimby to help local people understand how they may own a home of their own. On offer are the results of research into changing home needs and strategies that make ownership affordable and tailored to this region.  All are welcome.

Australian industry leaders have come together as the Future Housing Taskforce to bring back The Great Australian Dream of home ownership. The Taskforce set a new industry record for enquiries when they built an eco friendly affordable home in a warehouse to demonstrate how councils were so out of touch with the real needs of the Australian public. The Smarter Small Home was profiled on A Current Affair (smartersmallhome.com.au).

Kevin Doodney

Future Housing Task Force founder Kevin Doodney, who will be the main speaker at the information night, has been working with 16 Councils to help bring home ownership closer to ordinary Australians.

“The Future Housing Taskforce is responding to a media story by Peter Weekes of January 24, which put Richmond Tweed as the highest land value in Australia” said Kevin Doodney. “This makes the region the most unaffordable in the whole nation, putting massive pressure on new families being able to live and work in the region without renting for life. On the night we are not there to just talk, we are there to deliver immediate solutions that are up to $130,000 cheaper than what is currently on offer. We are spending these weeks leading up to May 3rd focusing on ideas which end up in the delivery back to people of home ownership at various price points, instead of the current one size fits all scenario”.

The information night will show new approaches to housing that suit changing buyer needs from work at home to single households. Kevin will explain how different income levels can access home ownership and the types of homes to suit their budgets. He will also profile some flexible housing options including dual key and duplex.

“Kevin Doodney’s achievements and innovative concepts are world class.” High praise from Peter Sherrie, National President of the Urban Development Institute of Australia. The event is proudly sponsored by Tallowood Ridge Estate and we are offering generous incentives with land from $185,000 and house and land packages from $384,000.

7:00pm Thursday 3rd May, Mullumbimby Civic Hall MC (the divine) Mandy Nolan, food and coffee available from Cafe Xpress $5 entry fee, which goes to Mullumbimby Youth Cottage. Kids free and welcome. NBN at Tallowood

March 19th, 2012
NBN LogoTallowood Ridge is the very first site in the Northern Rivers to be connected to the Federal Government’s National Broadband Network. The estate, just next to the Mullumbimby Hospital, saw the final “haul in” of the fibre-optic trunk main cable earlier this week, and is now fully connected to the network.
It’s great news for our residents. They’re on the edge of town, surrounded by rolling green hills, yet connected to the whole world better than people in major cities.
Tallowood Ridge and Armidale are the only places on the entire North Coast to be connected to the network.
NBN coverage represents superfast broadband speed (up to 100MBs per second), the ability to access all channels, including those previously only on pay TV, quality and high resolution in picture to an exceptional standard, the ability to have large numbers of phone lines into your home and all of this through one place, rather than dealing with a multitude of service providers.
Business and marketing consultant Roe Ritchie is perhaps best known as Producer of the wildly successful childrens’ fairytale The Grimstones. Roe has recently purchased at Tallowood Ridge with her partner Tracey. “I work remotely, as a lot of my business occurs in Melbourne and Brisbane” said Roe. “So to have access to really fast internet is invaluable. The NBN coverage makes it possible for us to live in the most beautiful part of Australia and be connected in a fast efficient way to the rest of the world”.
The massive $35 billion initiative, which will take ten years to roll out across Australia, is based upon utilising fibre optic cables that will last forever, unlike the current copper cables encased in plastic which degrade and suffer from signal loss. The new cables are made from a bundle of strands of glass, which don’t degrade in the presence of air, salt spray or moisture.
Fibre optic is the quantum leap in communication, it’s wonderful that it is first happening here, in Mullumbimby and at Tallowood.
Tallowood Ridge is the most affordable new land release in the Byron Shire and the last major land release in Mullumbimby. Land is priced from $195,000 to $294,000, with house and land packages from $384,000.

Koala Management

March 16th, 2012
Now that Stage One is complete and we are moving forward with future planning we are actively pursuing policies to both improve the future liveability of the estate and also protect and enhance the environmental qualities of the area.
One of our first achievements was to finalise a Biodiversity Conservation Management Plan, which was approved by Byron Council in December 2011. That plan will see over 100,000 native trees planted throughout the estate, which was degraded from 50 years of intensive cattle farming.
More recently we have focused on ensuring that the Estate happily co-exists with koalas, who in November 2011 were found to occasionally use a small patch of forest on the edge of the estate as a transit lane. Along with the old growth trees on the ridge, all trees used by koalas for food will be preserved in the area where they transit, and this area will be screened with a special koala-friendly fence.
When we discovered this path, we immediately took the decision to modify our planning so the whole estate is more koala friendly, We have brought experts in and will prepare a Koala Plan of Management before the lodgement of any DA’s for future stages. This plan will define strategies to protect and enhance koala habitat. We will also establish a covenant ensuring that households that keep a dog have a fenced area. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy their presence and protect their lifestyle.
As the community’s first homes go up, the first stage of the children’s park is being built. Community gardens, landscaped walkways and sports facilities will follow. The development of Tallowood Ridge is a series of gentle strokes that will form community. Our planning for biodiversity conservation and koala protection are a first step in this approach.

August 1st, 2011

whales-watching-in-Bruns-tallowood

Next time you head down to Brunswick Heads listen out for the sound of church bells as it’s likely to mean whales have been spotted cruising by.

A novel initiative of the Taking Care of Brunswick Community Economic Transition Plan (CETP), the bells of St Thomas Anglican Church will ring each time a Brunswick Heads Volunteer Rescue duty officer spots a passing pod of whales.

The best places to see the whales include the south break wall and the beach entrance close to the Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club.

Mullum to Bruns Paddle Sunday May 29 2011

May 26th, 2011

Mullum to Bruns PaddleThe second 10-kilometre Mullum to Bruns Paddle on Sunday May 29 is the perfect opportunity for families to get active together in one of the shire’s most stunning and vibrant waterways.

“Regardless of whether you are on a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, surf ski, rowboat or dragon boat, paddling is a great way to improve the body’s cardiovascular and aerobic systems while also increasing upper body strength,” said event coordinator Penny Fuller.

Starting at Heritage Park in Mullum and concluding between the bridges at Terrace Park in Bruns, this community fundraising event is separated into two main divisions: the Stand-up Paddle Challenge sets off at 9am while the non-competitive Fun Paddle follows at 9.30am.

Paddlers can expect to see stunning views of Mt Chincogan and Nightcap National Park Range, as well as a host of mangrove forest flora and fauna along the way.

The journey, which takes roughly 2.5 hours to complete, is gentle for first-time paddlers yet engaging enough for the more competitive entrants.

Brunswick Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Brunswick Surf Lifesaving Club will have several boats stationed along the 10-kilometre course, ensuring a safe journey for all participants. The SES’s new flood boat also will join this year.

The Tony Carsburg Board Challenge also has expanded to include several two-kilometre races on short boards and long boards taking off from Ferry Reserve, which are open to participants aged eight years and over.

“More than 60 prizes ranging from cash donations and kayak tours to shopping vouchers should provide extra incentive to paddlers,” said Penny.

”Certificates will be presented to everyone who successfully completes the journey, while trophies also will be awarded to winners of the competition section.

This three-way fundraiser for the Brunswick Heads Visitor’s Centre, Brunswick Volunteer Marine Rescue and Brunswick Surf Lifesaving Club, is a great example of how the community pools its limited resources to achieve a common goal.

Mullum to Bruns Paddle registrations are available online while prize information, entry forms and maps can all be downloaded from www.mullum2brunspaddle.com.au

Minyon Falls minutes from Tallowood Ridge Estate

February 3rd, 2011

Minyon-Falls_Veda-DantePlunging dramatically into a palm-shaded gorge roughly 100-metres below, Minyon Falls is a spectacular sight after a bout of heavy rain.

Minyon Falls is part of a larger area known as Minyon Falls Flora Reserve, which, because of its high scientific, recreational and scenic value is excluded from all logging operations.

On clear days there are views to the ocean from the waterfall’s edge, which is accessed from a wheelchair accessible platform. Minyon Falls Loop Walk can be accessed from Minyon Falls picnic area; this walk takes visitors through changing vegetation to the base of the falls past a large Brushbox stand and along the escarpment edge.

There are picnic and camping facilities here. There is a relatively easy 3km-walking track leading to Peates Mountain Lookout. The Boggy Creek Track (2 km) and Eastern Boundary Track (2.5 km) both lead you back to the Minyon Falls Picnic Area.

Depending on the route you choose (25 mins via Goonengerry Road; 35 mins via Coolamon Scenic Drive), Minyon Falls is a short distance from Tallowood Ridge Estate. The roads are well signposted but you can always get exact directions from www.maps.google.com

OZ Stand Up Paddle CentresA great way to explore the Brunswick River at either low or high tide, SUP is a family friendly activity that is quick to learn and fun to do.

SUP can be traced back hundreds of years to the ancient Polynesians. They often used to stand up and use a paddle to help them navigate, increasing visibility above and below the water.

In the early 1960s, the native “Beach Boys” of Waikiki, Hawaii, would stand on their long boards and, by using their outrigger canoe oars, would paddle out to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf.

The difference between traditional surfing and SUP is that you don’t need a wave to have a good time – you can paddle out in the open ocean or up and down the Brunswick River. Virtually any age can have a go and you don’t need to be super fit or need experience.

Making a booking with SUP and they guarantee that if you’re not up and paddling within the first lesson, they’ll give you your money back. It’s that simple!

Local Indigenous artist shortlisted to meet Oprah

October 21st, 2010

One of Indigenous Australia’s most engaging, entertaining and memorable performers has been shortlisted by Tourism Australia to appear on stage with Oprah Winfrey when she comes to Australia later this year.

DhinawanA resident of Brunswick Heads, which is located 15 minutes drive from Tallowood Ridge Estate, Dhinawan hopes to meet the Big O when she films the much-hyped final episode of her series final.

A descendant of the Gamillaroi Bigambul tribe, Dhinawan started as a tour guide on Queensland’s Fraser Island when he was 19 years old and has since become one of Australia’s busiest cultural ambassadors.

When not spearheading anti-bullying programs in primary schools and painting boards for pro surfers Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson, the now 36-year-old travels regularly overseas to perform in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

As a way to foster cultural awareness among Aussie children, Dhinawan established an innovative corroboree program called the Deadly Dancers. Made up of roughly 40 kids aged 5-17 years of age, the group regularly perform in the Northern Rivers at primary and secondary schools, as well as major events like Splendour in the Grass, Quiksilver Pro, and Lismore Rodeo Show.

Land Sales, On The Rise

October 31st, 2009

October has been a great month for sales at Tallowood Ridge, with 5 sales exchanged. This increases our annual rate of sales to 60 lots per year and signals to us that the financial crisis is coming to an end, at least in the Byron Shire.

With total of 20 sales made in Stage One and only 11 lots remaining, it won’t be long til it’s time to release Stage Two. If you looked at Stage One and didn’t find your perfect homesite, check with the agents in Mullumbimby and Byron to see if they have the plan yet of the new homesites in Stage Two.

We are pleased to see such a high level of interest in Tallowood Ridge, but are not surprised as there hasn’t been a new “Greenfield” land release in the north of the Byron Shire for more than 10 years.

Council Votes To Move Forward On Sewage Management

September 11th, 2009

We are pleased to report that Council voted last night to write to the NSW govt in support of the application by Simmonds & Bristow Pty Ltd for license to operate the onsite Sewage Management System (SMS). The SMS will temporarily provide sewer service to the lots in the initial stage (31 lots) until Council’s new STP is completed late next year. The SMS allows Tallowood Ridge to proceed to construction and not be held up by the ban on development due to lack of capacity in Council’s treatment works.

National Paper Profiles Tallowood Ridge

August 8th, 2009

Well, Mullumbimby has now made it onto the radar screen: The Sydney Morning Herald wrote an article today about “…the most desirable places to move to in country NSW, topping an ”amenity index” compiled by geographers based on the attributes sea / tree / and hill-changers seek.” Mullumbimby ranked as the 7th most desirable place!

Some of the comments in the SMH article:

“The coast is mostly king in this index, while undulating hills, high rainfall creating green landscapes and flowing waterways score well. Being able to nip into a sizeable town for work and shopping also adds points. But mountains can trump ocean.”

“It’s a way of trying to measure and predict the location of those kinds of places most likely to attract people from predominantly metropolitan backgrounds in relatively large numbers,” Dr Argent said.

“It is walking distance to everything [and] you have the best of both worlds – the bush and the beach.”

“A group of sea-changers from around Australia swim every morning……, good coffee can be had in the main street and locals tend to saunter, rather than rush.”
